For C.B. & J.A., each artist and subjectThe first one glimpsed down the years, stacked perpendicular to train tracks designed by Mario Ponzo, as he stood, hat on head, camera in hand, face plastered to the aperture. He was so distant & yet so close it felt like the folds of his overcoat could cover me like a pair of impossibly large wings.
In the other, she folded into herself, knee resting against the lens, parallel with her chin. Her sylphlike frame cradled by long, thin arms, her expression one of immovable curiosity. The heat of summer rendered in black & white, in the chiaroscuro of Tri-X 400, her every move was shadowplay.
J.R. Barner is a writer, teacher, and musician living in Athens, Georgia. They are the author of the chapbooks Burnt Out Stars and Thirteen Poems and the collection, Little Eulogies, a selection of poetry spanning nearly thirty years.
